After 13 years in retail purchasing and supply, Mike became an assessor for apprenticeships with TBG Learning in 1999. He soon moved onto various development roles with learndirect, RNID and then LSN where he headed up the bidding and development team, helping design support programmes and research in areas including Train to Gain, Citizenship, Diplomas, Key Skills, Functional Skills and Foundation Learning. He joined AELP in February 2013.

Mike is married with 2 children and lives in rural Kent.








Dr. Sue Pember OBE

Governance Advisor and HOLEX Director of Policy and External Relations

Sue has extensive experience of teaching, education management and governance and leading on further education policy.

She is a national lead on governance. In 2015 the AoC commissioned Sue to draft a new Code of Good Governance for colleges in England and last year she was asked to do a similar exercise for Welsh colleges. Sue has vast board experience and has been a non-executive in both the private and public sector.

As the former lead, Director for Skills in the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS/DfE) she gained extensive experience of working with ministers and departmental board members. She led and orchestrated several national policies including the national apprenticeship review in 2006 which led to new investment in apprenticeships and was the architect of the Skills for Life (English and maths) Strategy.
